On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, on March 8, Dianova International announces that it will held a parallel event during the next session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (New York), on March 22.

The 2016 Commission on the Status of Women will have as its priority theme ‘Women’s empowerment and the link to sustainable development’. This topic is especially timely in the context of the twenty-year review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the recent adoption of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As the international community begins implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, the Commission will be an important opportunity for ensuring that this work accelerates the momentum towards achieving gender equality and women’s rights and empowerment.

A number of ‘parallel events’, or activities organized outside the formal programme of the CSW60, will provide nongovernmental organizations and other stakeholders with an opportunity to discuss themes of the Commission and other critical gender equality issues.

On 22 March, Dianova’s parallel event will take place in the context of the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Drugs (UNGASS), an event which later this year will provide an opportunity to discuss drug policies and to debate on what works and what could be improved in addressing the global drug problem.

Historically, women and girls have been neglected as a population whose development has long been thwarted, either by substance abuse or by the consequences of inadequate drug control efforts in many countries. Both have many times had harmful collateral consequences, fuelling corruption and instability, threatening public health and safety and generating marginalization of substance users, especially women.

For this reason, women’s needs should be further analysed and their voices should contribute to the discussion. Based on this principle, Dianova International has decided to focus its parallel event on best practices and grass root experiences from civil society organizations dedicated to women’s health and development.

Speakers will stress the importance of developing a gender perspective when implementing recovery and social reintegration practices for women. In addition, they will offer policy suggestions to foster the development of women, families and communities.
