The WOLA-Duke book award for human rights in Latin America - Call for submissions

The Washington Office on Latin America announces the third annual WOLA-Duke Book Award for Human Rights in Latin America for the best current, non-fiction book published in English on human rights, democracy and social justice in contemporary Latin America. The author of the winning book will receive a $1,000 cash prize.

NGO statement on behalf of the Eurasian Harm Reduction Network and the Youth R.I.S.E. regarding the Agenda Item 6 of the 2010 CND

This NGO statement was presented on behalf of the Eurasian Harm Reduction Network (EHRN) and the Youth R.I.S.E. regarding Agenda Item 6 ('Drug demand reduction: world situation with regards to drug abuse') of the 53rd Session of the COmmission on Narcotic Drugs, Plenary Meeting, in Vienna on March, 11th 2010. This statement was presented by Ms. Daria Ocheret, Chair of the Steering Committee of EHRN.

Call for proposals - Drug Policy Networking Space at AIDS 2010 Conference (DEADLINE 30TH APRIL)

IDPC and Transform have been successful in our application for a Drug Policy Networking Zone at the upcoming International AIDS Conference to be held in Vienna from the 18th to 22nd July 2010. There has been agreement that the Drug Policy Networking Zone will be co-located together with the Human Rights and Harm Reduction Networking Zones. We encourage those of you planning to attend the conference to propose activities for the zone relating to your areas of expertise that will be of interest to the AIDS 2010 conference delegates. Please read the attached document carefully and if you wish to make a proposal for activities / display your publications and/or volunteer, please complete the form and email it back to jane@tdpf.org.uk by no later than Friday 30th April 2010.

NGO Veza Report from the Public Hearing on EU Drug Policy 1998-2007

The main objectives of the Public Hearing were to discuss the 'Report on Global Illicit Drugs Market 1998-2007' and to define the conclusions of the Report that will be brought out by ENDOC during the General UNODC Conference in Vienna. The participants were EU NGO representatives, as well as members of the European Commission and Parliament. This meeting was a unique opportunity for NGO Veza to share ideas and problems regarding drug policy issues with the government representative of the Ministry of Health and the Euro Health Group for three days. This Public Hearing helped NGO Veza to build a bridge of cooperation with the Ministry of Health and therefore with other state institutions competent to help drug users in Serbia.

Seven years in jail for attempting to halt the spread of HIV

A 28 year old psychologist and AIDS activist has been sentenced to 7 years imprisonment in Uzbekistan. Authorities had been angered by the publishing of a pamphlet written by Popov called “The Healthy Way of Life: a Manual for Teachers of the 21st Century.”

Global Fund Community Systems Strengthening Consultation

The International HIV/AIDS Alliance and the International Council of AIDS Services Organizations (ICASO) are conducting an online consultation for civil society and other interested parties to input into the draft community systems strengthening framework (CSS for short). Please feed into this consultation through the online survey by no later than 5th March 2010. It is crucial to get the views from harm reduction and drug user organisations.
