'From waiting in line, to the United Nations': Families of people deprived of liberty as rights holders and key actors in crime prevention and social reintegration

Organised by Church World Service, with the support of Brazil, Uruguay, the UNODC Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section, the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT), Documenta – Análisis y Acción para la Justicia Social A.C. (Mexico), the Inter-American Children’s Institute of the Organization of American States (IIN-OEA), the International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC), the International Network of Relatives of Persons Deprived of Liberty (RIMUF), Penal Reform International, Plataforma NNAPEs – Regional Platform for the Rights of Children and Adolescents with Caregivers Deprived of Liberty in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT).
This hybrid side event, held during the 35th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, will place families of people deprived of liberty at the centre of the discussion, highlighting the impact of incarceration on women, girls, boys and adolescents.
The event will open an urgent conversation on human rights, prison policies, crime prevention and social reintegration. It will include the screening of an excerpt from the film The woman in the line, based on the true story of Andrea Casamento, followed by testimonies from Andrea, youth activists, human rights defenders and government representatives.
The discussion will bring together representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean, seeking to strengthen recognition of families as rights holders and key actors in crime prevention and social reintegration.
