IDPC Advocacy Note - The UN drug control system: A time for carefully planned reform

20 December 2012

The International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC), in collaboration with the Social Science Research Council and the Permanent Mission of Guatemala to the United Nations, organised a seminar on 7 December 2012 at the UN in New York.

This event was targeted at New York-based diplomats and UN officials and highlighted the issues emerging around drug policy debates in particular outlining details of some of the reform processes that are currently receiving press and political attention.

Sir Richard Branson presented on behalf of the Global Commission on Drug Policy with Mike Trace and Ethan Nadelmann discussing specific directions for reforms around the world. The event was attended by over 75 participants and proved that there is a great deal of interest in the drug policy debate within the New York UN structures.

This advocacy note was sent out in advance of the event to give a sense of the key topics for discussion.
