The Institute for Journalism and Social Change and Harm Reduction International are launching a new report, Aiding Executions?: How Aid Donors and the United Nations Enable the Death Penalty for Drug Offences.

The report examines international aid supporting narcotics control programmes in countries that retain the death penalty for drug-related offences, tracing funding flows that link international taxpayers to executions. It also highlights the role of UN agencies in implementing these programmes, raising concerns that such support may contribute to the imposition of death sentences.

The launch event will explore the report’s findings and their implications for international donors, UN agencies, and governments at a time when drug offences account for almost half of all confirmed executions globally.

Speakers:

  • Claire Provost, Co-Director, Institute for Journalism and Social Change
  • Mai Sato, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran and Director, Institute for Crime and Justice Policy Research, Birkbeck, University of London
  • Yenti Nurhidayat, Executive Director, Puskaha Indonesia
  • Giada Girelli, Senior Analyst, Harm Reduction International

The event will be chaired by Ajeng Larasati, Human Rights Lead, Harm Reduction International.
