We are pleased to announce that the VI International Conference on Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) will be held on 8th – 9th April 2019 at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands.

The series, which started in Budapest in 2012, aims to share knowledge and strengthen collaboration on NPS among multidisciplinary professionals at the international level.

The conference is jointly organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), University of Hertfordshire, University of Maastricht.

Harm Reduction International (HRI) and Agência Piaget para o Desenvolvimento (APDES) will host the 26th Harm Reduction International Conference – HR19 – will be held in Porto, Portugal from 28 April to 1 May 2019.

For international visitors, this conference will be a unique opportunity to learn about the benefits and lessons learned from Portugal’s progressive approach to drug policy and harm reduction, which included the decriminalisation of the possession and use of all drugs. Since 2001, the country has shown us that decriminalisation partnered with harm reduction can reduce HIV and overdose rates and increase access to vital health and social services. The approach has also highlighted the gaps in this policy-first approach and the need to include people who use drugs in policy making and other decisions about their health and rights.

It is estimated that in Latin America there are more than 2 million children and adolescents who have one of their parents deprived of their liberty and that of these, almost half a million live in this situation due to the mass incarceration of people for minor non-violent drug crimes.

Join us in the the launch of this study, based on the results of the fieldwork carried out in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay, has as main objective to make visible the impacts that this phenomenon has had on the lives of thousands of children and adolescents and that, still, are practically invisible to public policies in the region.
