IDPC recruits campaigns & communications volunteer

27 May 2026

Supported by: IDPC Campaigns and Communications Manager, and occasionally IDPC Head of Research and Communications

Purpose

IDPC is looking for volunteers passionate about drug policy reform and interested in honing their skills in communications and campaigning, while contributing to the work of the global network advancing drug policies grounded in human rights and social justice.

This is a flexible, unpaid volunteering opportunity, not an employment contract or route to paid work. As such, it is dependent on the volunteers’ interests and needs, and IDPC’s capacity to provide adequate support.

Time commitment

We suggest an initial period of three months, to give enough time for induction, learning and meaningful involvement in our work. The time commitment is flexible and will be agreed around the volunteer’s availability.

Location

The IDPC Secretariat is an international team with staff members located in the United Kingdom, Thailand, the Netherlands and Ghana. We work remotely and organise occasional check-ins with volunteers.

Involvement

Volunteers may choose to support one or more of the following areas:

Communications

  • Identifying relevant news, resources and developments on global drug policy reform.
  • Supporting updates to the IDPC and Support. Don’t Punish website.
  • Drafting or adapting social media content.
  • Supporting translations into relevant languages.

Campaigns

  • Sharing news and resources linked to the Support. Don’t Punish campaign
  • Supporting the development of the newsletter and social media content.

Research and publications

  • Light desk research on drug policy reform.
  • Identifying relevant reports, articles and advocacy materials.
  • Supporting the dissemination of IDPC publications through our communication channels.

Suitability

This opportunity suits someone who has:

  • A keen interest in drug policy reform, harm reduction, human rights and social justice issues.
  • Confidence using social media, and an interest in learning more about communications.
  • Excellent English language proficiency (knowledge of other languages is welcome).
  • Ease using the MS Office suite.
  • Familiarity with Canva and similar design tools would be a plus.
  • The ability to communicate clearly about their availability and support needs.

We welcome applications from people with lived, living, professional, academic or activist experience relevant to drug policy, harm reduction, human rights and social justice.

Expressing your interest

Please send a short 2-3 paragraphs explaining why this volunteering opportunity is of interest to you, along with a CV or brief summary of relevant experience, to IDPC’s Campaigns & Communications Manager, Juan Fernández Ochoa jfernandez[@]idpc.net, by Friday, 12 June. We may follow up with an informal conversation and a short practical exercise designed to understand fit and support needs.
