UN General Assembly Side Event: "Fast-Track: Quickening the pace of action to end AIDS"

18 September 2017

You are cordially invited to join us at a high-level side-event “Fast-Track: Quickening the pace of action to end AIDS”, which will be held on the margins of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly on 21 September 2017, from 9:00am to 10:30am, in Conference Room 4 at the UN Headquarters. The event will be hosted by H.E. Yoweri Museveni, President of Uganda, in collaboration with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). Several other heads of state and government, as well as other high-level dignitaries are expected to join (more details will be shared closer to the date).

With the adoption of the UN GA 2016 Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS, Member States committed to delivering on a shared agenda to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030. The world, and Africa in particular, has made great progress in curbing HIV/AIDS, but more work lies ahead. For the first time, 19.5 million people - more than half of all the people living with HIV - are accessing life-saving treatment. However, globally, while new HIV infections have fallen, they have not fallen fast enough and resources for the AIDS response are not commensurate with our ambitions and targets.

Recognizing that the current pace of progress needs to be quickened, the high-level event will highlight the urgency of fast-tracking our efforts to achieve the common goal of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030. It will renew political leadership and give impetus to accelerating collective actions to meet the 2020 Fast-Track targets and fulfilling the commitment to Shared Responsibility and Global Solidarity.

Access and Logistics Info

Due to security restrictions during the UN GA General Debate, a special event ticket (SET) will be required to access the event.

Staff members of the UN and other international organisations, as well as representatives of civil society, private sector, academia and other stakeholders are requested to register by 18 September, in order to be able to receive a SET. Click here or use the link https://goo.gl/forms/sJWlU8WZVi3OYrVo2 to access the registration form. Please note that the SETs are individual / non-transferable, hence we will not be able to provide you with one if you have not registered in due time.

For those who have registered, UNAIDS will distribute the SETs on the day of the event – 21 September, from 7:45am to 8:30am, at the corner of 46thStreet and 2nd Avenue. We will then escort you to the UNHQ, where you will need to go through a security screening, and once that has been done – we will escort you to Conference Room 4. Please make sure to bring a valid government issued ID to be able to clear the security screening. Also, to expedite the screening process, it is not advisable to carry bulky stuff, such as backpacks and laptops. Given the long lines at the security, as well as heavy traffic in NY City during the UNGA week, we encourage you to arrive early for the security screening. Lastly, please note that the SET will be valid only for the particular event it is issued for and you shall leave the UNHQ after the event is over (unless you have a SET for another event).
