The New EU Drugs Strategy post-2012
The seminar will analyse the content and practical impact of the EU’s new multiannual Drugs Strategy, which is scheduled to be adopted in early December. It will provide practitioners with an update on the tools available to combat drug smuggling, the latest developments on the side of both drug smugglers and those fighting them, as well as case studies of best practice and the present situation regarding drug supply and demand.
The current EU legal instruments in anti-drugs policy date back to 2004 and 2005 (Council Decisions 2004/757/JHA and 2005/387/JHA) and have often been criticised as inadequate. The Treaty of Lisbon allows for more decisive action on drug trafficking, which is expected to be reflected in the new strategy.
