The aim of this inventory is twofold: to give an update of the current number of drug consumption rooms in the Netherlands, and to provide insight into the DCRs’ main features such as opening hours, objectives and services on offer.
MapCrowd provides estimates on people who inject drugs, the prevalence of hepatitis c among this population, their access to and uptake of treatment, and on the importance of harm reduction services in policies.
Whilst WHO member states aim to eliminate hepatitis C by 2030, interviews with 'at risk' individuals suggest that insufficient awareness of the illness and a lack of health facilities act as barriers to these ambitious targets.
The EMCDDA shows the encouraging progress that has been made to reduce the prevalence of infectious diseases amongst people who inject drugs, while also highlighting the need to extend the existing programs and services.
Moving forward, major challenges include ensuring that new infections are prevented from occurring and that people who are living with HCV are tested, linked to care, treated, receive appropriate follow-up, and have equitable access to care.
