Ugandan Harm Reduction Network visits to Tanzanian harm reduction services

21 November 2012

In November 2012, the Ugandan Harm Reduction Network (UHRN) sent a delegation of three staff to visit the progressive harm reduction services in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The study visit was coordinated and funded by the International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC) and Harm Reduction International (HRI) as part of the on-going network development in Africa. Two IDPC staff also took part in the visit.

The delegation first visited the state-run methadone programme, housed in the psychiatric Department of the Muhimbura Hospital in the north of the city. It then met with YOVARIBE, a community-based outreach NGO providing harm reduction services to people who use drugs, and referring them to the methadone clinic. Finally, the team visited the needle and syringe programme run by Médecins du Monde.

This visit was an opportunity for UHRN representatives to learn more about how these harm reduction services are design and delivered, in order to be able to promote similar initiatives in Uganda.

For more information, please read a small summary of the visit on the IDPC blog, or the report below drafted by UHRN.
