The eighth annual conference of the International Society for the Study of Drug Policy (ISSDP) will be held in Rome, Italy, from Wednesday 21st to Friday 23rd of May 2014 at the venue CNR (National Research Council).

The event is being organized by the Centre for Biostatistics and Bioinformatics of the University of Tor Vergata and the Italian Social Science Council.

The conference should be of interest to policy makers, practitioners and academics from a wide array of disciplines who are engaged in drug policy research pertaining to drug markets, the harms caused by both the supply of and demand for drugs, and the intended and unintended consequences of policy.

Researchers and practitioners interested in contributing papers that advance knowledge regarding the development, assessment, or evolution of drug policy nationally or internationally are encouraged to submit abstracts. As at all ISSDP conferences, we welcome papers on the monitoring, analysis, and evaluation of international and national drug policies as well as methodological and theoretical developments in drug policy analysis. Other areas of particular interest this year include the following:

  • The drug world after the economic recession: what has changed?
  • The rise of emerging psychoactive substances and new policy directions
  • Marijuana policy: what do we know about the public health implications from decriminalization and medical marijuana?
  • Drug markets and policy responses outside of Europe and North America
  • Drugs and human rights
  • Harm reduction policies: Consumption rooms, prison needle exchange
  • Measurement in drug policy: how do we make sense of scarce information and define and measure new drug trends? What are the optimal indicators of health, social harm and supply?
  • Supply and regulation within and beyond consumer nations
  • What can drug policy learn from supply and regulation of other substances?
  • Corruption and organized crime: intersections between drugs, organized crime, and judicial systems.

Interesting quantitative or qualitative papers in other areas are also welcome. The term “drugs”should be interpreted broadly to include any illicit substance, the nonmedical use or abuse of presc riptio n drugs, the non-sanctioned use of legal regulated substances, and the diversion of legal chemicals for the production or use of psychoactive substances.

Individuals from Latin American, African, Asian, or Middle Eastern countries are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts or panels. Panels including participants from diverse countries will be preferred to panels consisting of papers from researchers in only one country. Abstracts for individual papers (200 and 400 words) and panel proposals for up to four abstracts of thematic papers should be submitted to cibb@uniroma2.it before 20 January 2014. Decisions will be provided in the second week of February 2014.

It is possible to submit papers presented to the International Journal of Drug Policy and papers on health issues, possibly, to Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health.

We strongly encourage Ph.D. students and scholars from developing countries to submit abstracts. A competitive scholarships program is available for these delegates.

Conference registration will open on 1 January 2014 and close on 13 May 2014. Information how to get to the venue in Rome and on discounted hotels that have been reserved for this conference will be posted on the webpage (link) in early November.
