Israël dépénalise partiellement la consommation de cannabis

27 juin 2017

The Israeli authorities have embarked on the decriminalization of the use of marijuana. Henceforth, any person arrested who consumes marijuana in a public place will receive a fine, and will be prosecuted only in the event of a repeat offense.

On 5 March, the Israeli government approved a project, drafted by the ministries of Public Security and Justice, partially decriminalizing the use of cannabis for recreational use in favor of a fine system.

Henceforth, people who will be controlled in possession or in the process of using cannabis in public will not immediately risk criminal prosecution. In the event of a first offense, these persons will have to pay a fine of 1,000 shekels (255 euros). They will have to pay double in the case of a second offense and in the third, they will receive a final warning. The police will defer a consumer to justice only if he is taken in possession or in the process of using cannabis in public on a fourth occasion.

Moreover, if a minor was caught using cannabis, a criminal investigation could be initiated against him if he refused to participate in an anti-drug awareness program, reported the Israeli daily Haaretz , citing the Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan.

"The approval of the government is an important step on how to implement this new policy, which will focus on information and treatment rather than repression," praised March 5 Gilad Erdan , Quoted by Haaretz .
