Ready next time - Outbreaks of infection in drug injectors in Scotland

In response to recent outbreaks of infectious diseases in Scotland amongst drug injectors, such as HIV, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and wound botulism, Scottish Drugs Forum have identified the requirement of a conference on infection outbreak control to share information and identify effective strategies.

This conference, 'Ready Next Time', will take place in Edinburgh on the 26th of April, and will enable attendees to hear accounts from frontline staff and those involved in outbreak control and response.

Presentations include:

Managing outbreaks of spore-forming bacteria infection in injecting drug users - Draft of the new guidelines - background and consultation
- Norah Palmateer Health Protection Scotland.

The Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes outbreak in heroin and ethylphenidate users in Lothian.
- Linda J Smith, Harm Reduction Team, Edinburgh.

The wound botulism outbreak in heroin users in Scotland.
- Gillian Penrice, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS

The HIV outbreak in heroin and stimulant users in Glasgow.
- Catriona Milosevic and Louise Carroll, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (to confirm) Glasgow Street Outreach Team (to confirm).

MRSA outbreak in injectors South West England.
- Maggie Telfer, Bristol Drugs Project.

New infections in injectors in Wales.
- Josie Smith Public Health Wales.

This conference will be of interest to all commissioners, management and staff or agencies working with people who inject drugs and to those who are involved in outbreak control including:

  • Health Boards
  • Public Health
  • Alcohol and Drugs Partnerships
  • Harm reduction services
  • Treatment services
  • Homelessness and other support services
