WHO evidence for action technical paper - Policy guidelines for collaborative TB and HIV services for injecting and other drug users: an integrated approach

28 October 2008

The World Health Organisation (WHO) have released a series of Evidence for Action technical papers and policy briefs on HIV/AIDS and injecting drug users. This paper, titled 'Policy guidelines for collaborative TB and HIV services for injecting and other drug users: an integrated approach', seeks to provide a strategic approach to reducing morbidity and mortality related to TB and HIV among at-risk drug users and their communities in a way that promotes holistic and person-centered services.

This technical paper was produced by the WHO in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, in consultation with a group of technical experts.

The aim of these guidelines is to provide a strategic approach to reducing morbidity and mortality related to TB and HIV among at-risk drug users and their communities in a way that promotes holistic and person-centered services. The guidelines are intended for professionals dealing with the drug users who have the most problematic patterns of use and who are most vilnerable to infection by HIV and TB, especially people who inject drugs.
