The 2016 special session of the United Nations General Assembly on the world drug problem will be convened at United Nations headquarters in New York from 19 to 21 April 2016. Its purpose is to review the progress made in implementation of the Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem, including an assessment of the achievements and challenges in countering the world drug problem within the framework of the international drug control conventions and other relevant United Nations instruments.

In resolution 69/201, the General Assembly reiterated its call upon the relevant United Nations agencies and entities and other international organizations to mainstream efforts to counter the world drug problem into their programmes and reaffirmed its decision that the special session of the General Assembly shall have an inclusive preparatory process allowing organs, entities and specialized agencies of the United Nations system, relevant international and regional organizations, civil society and other relevant stakeholders to fully contribute to the process.
