8th National Conference on Drug Policy

20 September 2010

Drug control policies are subject to tensions, contradictions and conflicts regarding the way drug production and use should be controlled. It is in this context that local and international debates have developed.

In Argentina, social inequalities and high disparity between rich and poor, these debates cannot ignore the consequences of drug control: social isolation, disproportionate numbers of drug users and 'mules' incarcerated, environmental damage and violations of basic human rights.

Since 2003, the National Conference on Drug Policy, organised by Intercambios, has constituted an important platform for discussion and elaboration of proposals on drug policy. The objectives of the conference are:

  • To enable an informed social dialogue that promotes non-punitive policies, based on scientific evidence, to respond effectively to the diverse problems associated with illicit drugs.
  • To generate debates at the national level between academics and policy makers, in order to keep them up to date with trends in drug use, associated harms, politics and interventions.
