IDPC was set up in 2007 following a meeting of NGOs, which identified the need for a global advocacy and communication structure in the area of drug policy. Since its inception, the Consortium has grown to 113 members worldwide.
The IDPC governance structure was reviewed and amended in 2013, as a result of an open consultation with our members. IDPC has a two-tier governance model:
The Board of Directors comprises six appointed Directors and is responsible for the financial and legal oversight of the organisation.
A Strategy Sub-Committee of the Board is responsible for the strategic direction and work plans of the Consortium. This larger group contains 12 members: two Board members (ensuring coordination between the two groups) and ten representatives from different regions or constituencies who are directly elected by IDPC members:
- Africa and the Middle East
- Eastern Europe and Central Asia
- Latin America and the Caribbean
- North America
- Western and South East Europe
- International Organisations
- People Who Use Drugs
- Growers of Crops Deemed to be Illicit
